Some Adams County residents said they’re fed up with a construction company tearing up their roads. They said most of the damage takes place along Adams County Road 1700 in Columbus Township.

Without four wheel drive, they said you can’t navigate the roads that lead to Gin Ridge Sow Farm’s construction site. “It’s completely gone through now and rutted up to where in 26 27 years, I’ve never seen it like that,” said Mary Beckman. Click here to read more…..

Rural Residents for Responsible Agriculture: Hog CAFOs and Democratic Action in Illinois

Check out this article written by one of our members that describes her group’s fight against a proposed CAFO. Here’s a summary and link to the piece:

“Rural Residents for Responsible Agriculture (RRRA) is a local nonprofit group formed in West Central Illinois that successfully prevented the construction of an 18,220 head Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). Here I document my participation in this group and our ability to overcome largely undemocratic channels used by the industrial swine industry to site CAFOs. I situate our struggle within the well- documented literature on CAFOs’ negative effects on the environment, economy, and health of the people living near them. I then consider the lobbying power behind industrialized agriculture and relate this information to RRRA’s fight. I provide a detailed account ofhow my rural community quickly organized and overcame the many challenges we faced from elected officials and lobbyists who had a vested economic and/or political interest in the construction of CAFOs.” Click here to read more…

We start with a discussion that is scheduled for the second hour of today’s show. It’s about a battle that is raging right now in Adams County in the western part of Illinois. If you live in Chicago or environs, you might not be familiar with Adams County. However, you might know that Quincy, the county seat, which sits on the Mississippi River, is roughly 140 miles north of St. Louis, also on the Mississippi.

Another thing that you should know is that there is 5,000-head concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) that would like to be established in the county. It’s part of a company called County Line Swine and, according to Illinois Citizens for Clean Air and Water (ICCAW) and the Socially Responsible Agricultural Project (SRAP), it “would be sited adjacent to a successful certified organic farm and near Adams County residents who have pre-existing health problems that would be impacted by the massive animal confinement.” Click here to read more…..

Approximately 70% of U.S. antibiotics are sold for industrial livestock & poultry production; CDC estimates 23,000 Americans die from resistant infections

SPRINGFIELD, IL–– NOVEMBER 28, 2018––Medical professionals and public health advocates spoke in favor of legislation to stop the overuse of antibiotics in industrial agriculture during a Senate hearing at the State Capitol on Wednesday morning. The legislation, SB3429, sponsored by State Senator Daniel Biss (D, Evanston) would end the common practice of regularly feeding healthy animals antibiotics, which experts warn contributes to the rise and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, sometimes referred to as “superbugs.” Click here to read more…..
